CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKAEMIA (CML)

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. In CML the bone marrow produces too many granulocytes which are actually white cells. These cells are called blasts or leukemic blasts, which gradually crowds the bone marrow, interfering with normal blood cell production. They also come out of the bone marrow and circulate all around the body in the bloodstream because they are not fully mature and they are not able to work properly to fight infections.

CML develops gradually, during the early stages of disease and progresses over weeks or months and so on. There are three phases they are the chronic phase, the accelerated phase and the blast phase. These phases are partitioned by the number of blast cells in the blood and bone marrow and by the severity of symptoms.

Common symptoms of chronic myeloid leukemia are weight loss, getting more infections than usual, tiredness and looking pale, swollen lymph gland, abnormal bruising and bleeding, sweating at night, headache, body pain and poor appetite.

Symptoms that occurs at the later stage of CML are eyesight changes, swollen and painful joints, changes in kidney function, persistent painful erection etc.

There are so many types of leukemia they are acute myeloid leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Treatment for CML may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, stem cell transplant and orimmunotherapy.
