Hematology is a branch of science which deals with the study of blood, blood diseases and the blood-forming organs. The word “heme” comes from the Greek its meaning is blood.

Scope of Hematology

Hematology is concerned with the treatment of blood disorders and malignancies, Physicians working in the field of hematology are called hematologists

The diseases which are treated by hematologists include:

Leukemia, Iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia or trauma-related anemia, Polycythemia or excess production of red blood cells, Myelofibrosis, Hemophilia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, Von Willebrand disease, The myelodysplastic syndromes, Hemoglobinopathies, Multiple myeloma, Malignant lymphomas, Blood transfusion, Bone marrow stem cell transplantation.

Connection to other branches of Medicine

Hematology is linked with oncology which deals with cancer and tumors. One of the treatments of cancer is chemotherapy, which is used to destruct the cancer cells.

Hematologist first-hand practical experience in a training centre provides hematologists with expertise in the following areas are to diagnose the cause of abnormalities in blood formation and other blood disorders, the various blood related disorders and cancers diagnosis using laboratory tests, Blood diseases or hematological diseases patient’s care and treatment responsibility.

Different treatments that can be used in hematological disorders are the following:

Changing of diet, Iron tablets or liquid should be taken, Megaloblastic anemia is treated with folic acid pills and Vitamin B12 injections, To prevent excess blood coagulation anticoagulation therapy can be used, Therapeutic blood-letting is applied in rare cases of Polycythemia; the drug which is commonly used for iron overload is desferrioxamine, Under the care of hematologists various blood cancer chemotherapies are provided.
